The story in brief

In its 4 November release, the Ministry says the proposed trigger is a Government Analyst’s report finding a drug below standard on specified parameters. These include medicine strength, dissolution, related substances, impurities and sterility; the proposal targets the concerned drug’s manufacturing licence.1 The suspension would remain until the manufacturer investigates the cause and implements corrective and preventive measures verified by the licensing authority. The Ministry also proposes routing the analyst’s report to the central drug regulator, the relevant State authority, manufacturer and marketer for coordinated action.1 Union Health Ministry: The Ministry says faster intervention would help stop continued manufacture and distribution of substandard medicines.1

Context: This policy proposal does not identify a particular medicine recall or advise patients to change treatment.
