The story in brief

On 3 November, the Ministry described proposed changes to the Drugs Rules, 1945. Manufacturers would designate a suitably qualified, experienced person to authorise batch release and keep prescribed records, with a standard Batch Release Certificate format.1 Batch release means reviewing quality checks and documentation before a production batch enters distribution. Manufacturing licences already identify technical manufacturing and testing staff, but the Ministry says there is no specific provision identifying the batch-release authoriser.1 Union Health Ministry: The Ministry says clearer responsibility and traceable decisions would add oversight of product quality.1

Context: The announcement concerns manufacturers’ release procedures and makes no change to patient prescriptions.

Who this matters for: Medicine users and manufacturers
