The story in brief

In its 5 November update, UIDAI lists sectors including hotels, healthcare, education, events and the gig economy. These partners are called Offline Verification Seeking Entities: organisations using the Aadhaar offline-verification mechanism to check identity, rather than a new category of Aadhaar card.1 UIDAI also reports more than 86 lakh mobile-number updates through the Aadhaar App, alongside 22.16 lakh address updates and 40.25 lakh email updates. It says these app services let residents update details without physically visiting a centre; the release gives cumulative usage figures, not a new application deadline.1 UIDAI: UIDAI describes offline checks as consent-based and designed to limit the personal data shared.1

Context: The announcement does not make Aadhaar verification newly compulsory for every hotel, school or service user.
