The story in brief

A Rural Development Ministry–National Housing Bank dialogue examined financing gaps for PMAY-G households. The 2 November release says lenders showed interest in loans beyond existing scheme assistance, since construction costs can exceed that assistance.1 Participants recommended dedicated ₹2–5 lakh rural housing loans with repayments suited to seasonal incomes, and a pilot before wider expansion. They also discussed guarantees, cheaper funding and property reforms; these remain recommendations for examination.1 Unclear land titles, mortgage restrictions, transaction costs and seasonal incomes were identified as barriers. The Ministry will examine suggestions with NHB, states and lenders.1

Context: A proposed loan is repayable credit, not an additional housing grant or a guaranteed approval for every beneficiary.
