The story in brief

The Coal Ministry’s November 2 release covers this group of mines, not India’s entire coal industry. October dispatches—the amount sent out from mines—reached 21.11 million tonnes, against 15.48 million in October 2025, an increase of about 36%.1 For April–October combined, production was 117.23 million tonnes compared with 105.33 million in the previous year’s corresponding period. That is 11.30% growth; the much larger 42% figure describes October alone.1

Ministry of Coal: The ministry expects higher output to reduce reliance on imported coal. These production and dispatch totals do not by themselves establish lower household electricity bills or a change in power-cut frequency.1
