The story in brief

Department of Telecommunications: Digital Bharat Nidhi, the Tamil Nadu government and TANFINET signed the agreement on October 30 under the Amended BharatNet Program. The telecom department expects support for more than five lakh rural household connections.1 Department of Telecommunications: The release also specifies on-demand connectivity for 4,767 villages. The department expects the network to support services such as online education, telemedicine and digital payments.1

Context: An agreement and subsidy approval do not mean every home already has a working connection. Rural residents should distinguish the planned rollout from local service availability; the announcement gives no household tariff, speed or connection date.
